Loss of property caused by a major fire that broke out in the go-down of a freight company here on Sunday is estimated at Rs. 5 crores, according to preliminary reports.

The fire broke out in the go-down of KRS Parcel Service on Pallikulam Road around 2 a.m. Fire and Rescue Services personnel swung into action and brought the blaze under control by 6 a.m. Twelve fire-engines from Thrissur, Guruvayur, Kunnamkulam, Vadakkanchery, Irinjalakuda and Angamaly fire stations were pressed into service. Residents in the neighbouring houses were evacuated.

Goods destroyed in the fire included ready-made clothes, medicines and chemicals. Ten LPG cylinders kept in the go-down fuelled the flames.

A fireman, P. B. Suni, was injured while battling the blaze.
