Three young girls drowned in a pond at remote Kombravettu locality at Enmakaje village falling under the Badiadukka police station on Saturday.

The incident was noticed around 5 p.m. as the three along with another girl ventured into the pond near their residence for washing clothes, Badiadukka sub-inspector A. Damodaran said.

The deceased were identified as Mumtaz, 10, Fasila, 11, and Fibhamina, 7, said to be cousins. The girls left their home at 2.30 p.m. with clothes to wash in the pond.

The tragedy came to the fore after the other girl, who remained in the land, alerted their relatives on watching the girls drowning in the pond.

A team of police officials along with fire and rescue personnel fished out the bodies and shifted to the General Hospital here for an autopsy, the police said.
