The paddy field in front of the Rudhira Mahakali Kavu Temple at Ottupara turned into a sea of people on Tuesday as thousands braved the heat and dust to witness ceremonies held as part of the famous Uthralikkavu Pooram.
The festivities began at 11.30 a.m. with the ezhunnellippu of Enkakkadu Desam. The elephant Thiruvambadi Sivasunder carried the thidambu to the accompaniment of panchavadyam . The Wadakkanchery Pooram began from the Shiva Temple by 12 noon. The elephant Thechikkottukavu Ramachandran carried the deity.
The procession from Kunaranellur desam reached the kavu by 1.45 p.m. Kuttankulangara Arjunan was the elephant that carried the thidambu for Kumaranellur Desam.
The panchavadyam drew to a close by 4 p.m.
The display of fireworks ( pakal vedikkettu ) began at 4.15 p.m. Enkakkadu, Wadakkanchery and Kumaranellur desams displayed spectacular show of fireworks.
In all, 29 elephants participated in the kottiyezhunnellippu . An exhibition of elephant accoutrements was organised as part of the pooram.
Traffic regulation was imposed in the area in connection with the festivities.
