Thousands of Hindus performed ‘bali tharpan' in the Bharathapuzha at Tirunavaya on Monday on the occasion of Karkidaka Vavu, seeking ‘moksha' or redemption for their ancestors.
People from different parts of Malabar thronged the Navamukunda temple at Tirunavaya from early morning and the ‘bali' rites continued till the afternoon.
Many people performed the rites on their own, while others sought the help of temple priests. Temple officials said the rites would continue on Tuesday too.
The roads were crowded with devotees heading to the Navamukunda temple. Morning trains and buses were packed with people.
Tirunavaya is one of the most prominent places for bali tharpan in the State. The presence of the temples of Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva adds significance to Tirunavaya, known as the Kashi of South India.
