Talking to The Hindu here on Thursday, K.T. Thomas expressed serious concern over the “irresponsible attitude’’ within certain socio-political quarters with regard to the Mullaperiyar issue. Creating panic among people in the downstream reaches by propping up unnecessary fears over the strength and safety of the dam was totally undesirable, he said.
Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told The Hindu that he had indeed called on Mr. Thomas, but only to say that the first and foremost concern of the State was the safety of the people, and not the projected revenue earnings by way of sharing electricity generated at the dam with Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Chandy maintained that his government had given a high priority to alleviating fears among people about the dam’s safety.
