He is now awaiting his Plus Two examination results, but unlike some of his pals who are either riding or dreaming of riding motorcycles, he owns a horse to ride on, much to the delight of his neighbours at Koothuparamba.

K. Harshavardhanan has been the centre of attraction at his native place Muriyad, near Koothuparamba, ever since his father bought him a horse to satisfy his latest craze for being on the horseback. Though the three-year-old horse is fully acquainted with him, he is yet to learn techniques of horse riding. The teenager, however, has learnt the basics of riding on horseback without outside help.

Harshavardhanan is no stranger to sports as he has won district-level roller skating competitions and is now undergoing shooting coaching. He is also a karate black belt holder.

“I have had a passion for horses for some years and when I asked for a horse, my father bought one for me,” said Harshavardhanan. He knew that his desire for owning a motorcycle and driving licence was unlikely to be fulfilled any time soon, he said.

The teenager is now planning to go to Udhagamandalam to undergo horse riding training there before his examination results are declared. He is also busy showing off his new companion to friends and relatives.

From Mysuru

“His passion for horse riding started after he rode on a horse during a visit to Kannur,” said his father Sudheer Babu, a Health Inspector attached to the District Vector Control Unit at Thalassery. During a family tour to Mysuru over six months ago, Harshavardhanan saw horses on the streets there and wanted to have one, Mr. Babu said, adding that they found a horse for sale.

After bargaining, they bought the horse at ₹1.5 lakh, which included transportation charges.
