K.K. Rema, wife of slain RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, has said that those accused in the murder of her husband should have been given capital punishment.

At the same time, she said, the verdict exposed the role of the CPI (M) in the murder case. Reacting to the judgment, she told mediapersons that the motive for killing Chandrasekahran was not personal enmity but political hostility. To a certain extent, the verdict was satisfactory as the CPI (M) conspirators had also been awarded life imprisonment along with the killer gang. However the accused should have been hanged considering the gruesome nature of the crime.

Ms. Rema said she would approach the higher court against the sentence. The case should be considering as rarest of rare cases, she said.

K.K. Madhavan, father of Rema and former secretary of Balussery area committee of the CPI(M), also said that verdict had clearly revealed the involvement of the CPI(M) in the killing of Chandrasekharan. The verdict had demolished the arguments of the CPI (M) that the party had no role in the conspiracy. “If the CPI(M) leaders were innocent, why was the party opposing a CBI probe in the case,” he asked.
