The Seventh Thekkady Flower Show being organised by the Agri Horticulture Society at the Kallarackal gardens here is drawing crowds, including visitors from outside the State.

The flower show, which boasts of a good number of plant variety, has also showcased different species of orchids from outside the district.

“A major feature of the show is that most of the varieties are grown locally,” said T.T. Thomas, general convenor of the flower show.

Around 50,000 plants have been arranged in a large ground near the Thekkady junction. Vegetable and Ayurvedic plants are also available. The details of the medicinal value of the plant, their scientific names and other relevant descriptions are made available for the visitors.

Seminars, cultural shows, competitions for children and folk arts performances have been organised as part of the show. Mr. Thomas said that every year, there is a theme for the flower show and this year it was “water control and electricity management”.

He said the traditional way of water harvesting has been highlighted in the show to re-emphasise the relation between man with nature. “Now what is needed is harvesting rain water and limit its misuse,” he said.

The show will conclude on Sunday.
