‘Theatre a reflection of struggles, fights’

Theatre forms have always reflected the fights and struggles on contemporary issues, an open discussion held at the International Theatre Festival of Kerala has noted.

Participating in the discussion, theatre activist Surjith said the theatre of resistance has always inspired protests. For example, the play ‘Karuna’ was a fight against the social conditions that prevailed at the time.

Theatre activist Ramesh Varma said the discussions on theatre in Kerala lacked diversity. It should explore different kinds of experiments and struggles, he added.

Addressing the ‘Meet the Artist’ programme, the Zoukak theatre activists said they were trying to give voice to the commoner in Lebanon who has been silenced by the government. They performed a song from the play, ‘He Who Saw Every Thing’, which was staged on Tuesday.

Death comes through the eyes: Zoukak theatre, Lebanon, N.N. Pillai Tent Theatre. The play discusses how news about deaths influence people.

Kaliyachan: Ekalochanam, Palakkad, Natyagraham. ‘Kaliyachan’ is the theatre adaptation of P. Kunjiraman Nair’s poem of the same title.

About Ram: Katkatha Puppet Art Trust, New Delhi, K.T. Mohammed Theatre. The play stages a few parts of Bhavabhoothi Ramayan with the help of animation.
