The Thalassery block panchayat has achieved total primary education under the Kiran scheme being launched in the district under the aegis of the district panchayat.

Block panchayat president T. Anil said at a press conference here on Friday that the panchayat was the first local body to record the total primary education achievement under the Kiran scheme. Out of the 892 people in the block panchayat who had appeared for the State level Class IV equivalency test conducted by the State Literacy Mission, 886 passed, he said, adding that the block panchayat was also the first to ensure that all learners who had been identified for the equivalency examination were sent to learning centres.

Mr. Anil said that over 150 people including literacy activists and instructors had been involved in the drive over the past one year. The initiative had been led by the District Literacy Mission and the Block Literacy Committee, he said. The block panchayat was now preparing for the total Class VII equivalency programme, he added.

The block panchayat president said the announcement of the total primary education achievement of the local body would be held at the Sarada Krishna Iyer Town Bank Auditorium at Thalassery on September 28. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan would be the chief guest at the function, he said.
