Textbooks for students almost ready

Print order was given to Kerala Books and Publications Society in September 2016 itself

Around 98 % of the textbooks for the students of Std VIII, IX and X is ready and has been made available to the schools in the State already, the Minister for Education C. Ravindranath informed the Assembly on Monday.

The government hopes to make available the remaining 2 % to the schools by May 20 as part of the mission to make available textbooks in the beginning of the academic year, the Minister said while replying to questions in the House.

During the tenure of the LDF government, the textbooks will not be delayed. To ensure that the books reach the students during the beginning of the 2017-18 academic year, the Minister said the print order was given to Kerala Books and Publications Society in September 2016 itself.

Plus One classes in the State will commence on June 14. The government will directly conduct the examinations for Std I to XII, the Education Minister said, adding that the vigilance inquiry into the leak of the SSLC Mathematics question paper was on and the guilty will be punished.

The initiative of the government to improve the academic standards in the school is progressing. Mr. Ravindranath said the growth of the education sector can be attained only through the improvement of academic standards. The scheme to provide training to 1.5 lakh teachers has commenced.

In reply to another question, the Education Minister said agriculture is to be made part of the school curriculum. The curriculum committee is taking steps in this regard. Biodiversity parks are being set up in schools as part of this, he added.
