The Archaeology Department officials who had visited the Megalithic site at Dayananda Ashram at Puliyankad near Kollengode on Wednesday confirmed that the “site is of an old Megalithic settlement.”
The port-holed cists found here are that of the megalithic period of 1000 DC to 200 AD.
The two member team consisting of B. Balamohan, Head of Thrissur Archeological Museum and its curator K.R. Sona examined the site where the cists were found. (The Hindu, June 8).
Mr. Balamohan said that three cists were identified by them during their examination of the site and there are traces of many more such megalithic chambers in the compound.
They are of secondary burials – that is bones kept in port-holed cists along with other items like beads, parts of weapons etc.
He said the excavation of the area will be taken up after the monsoon rain. During rainy season it will be difficult excavate and correctly measure the soil layers to assess the port-holes correctly, he said.
He said that the Ashram authorities were requested not to disturb the area and remove anything from the spot where cists were found.
