The Union Rural Development Ministry has constituted an inter-ministerial task force, headed by its additional secretary, to oversee and monitor tribals’ welfare programme and development package announced by the Centre for Attappady region in Kerala.

At least 40 child deaths were reported in the last one year, mainly due to malnutrition. The team will have officials of the rank of deputy secretaries from the ministries of Health, Women and Child Welfare, Tribal Affairs and Human Resource Development.

The first meeting of the team will be held on June 24 to discuss the programmes to be implemented in the region.

During his recent visit, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh had announced a Rs.125-crore special package for the Attappady tribal belt. The package will be implemented in 18 months.
