Tamil Nadu diverting water: Council

December 15, 2012 08:42 pm | Updated 08:42 pm IST - PALAKKAD:

Steps should be taken to stop Tamil Nadu from diverting water flowing into the Malampuzha reservoir at Alanthara and Parapetty areas in the Western Ghats, the Malampuzha Dam Protection Council has said.

In a memorandum submitted to District Collector P.M. Ali Asgar Pasha here on Saturday, council secretary P.S. Panikkar said the reservoir had less water this time as Tamil Nadu had diverted water from the catchment areas.

The council sought stern action against Tamil Nadu and said such diversion had been detected earlier from Attumala Hills.

Farmers were unable to take up paddy cultivation on 10,000 acres of land in the Malampuzha ayacut area due to shortage of water in the reservoir, he said. The council also has urged the District Collector to take steps to get silt removed from the reservoir. Silt accumulation had reduced storage capacity, he added.
