Seminars, debates, cultural programmes, and rallies by various organisations marked International Women’s Day here on Wednesday.
On the day, Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) honoured successful women agri entrepreneurs.
Director of Extension S. Estelitta inaugurated the function and honoured Latha Vijaya, Sumila Jayaraj, Latha Raveendran, Rekha P.T., and Latha Santhosh, who used agri-related technologies to foster entrepreneurship and raise income.
A talk on Legal Protection for Women by C. Mujib Rahman, sub-judge, District Legal Services Authority, was also arranged.
The KAU Centre for Gender Studies and Farm Entrepreneurship Development (CGSFED) organised a talk on ‘Cybercrime: Awareness and Prevention.’ Cybercrime Investigator Dhanya Menon delivered a talk. The programme was inaugurated by KAU Registrar S. Leenakumari. P.S. Geethakutty, Coordinator CGSFED, was present.
Gender guards
Thrissur Mayor Ajitha Jayarajan inaugurated the Women’s Day celebrations of the Kudumbasree Mission. At the meeting, it was decided to appoint ‘gender guards’ in all Community Development Societies.
The guards will be responsible for protection of women and children against harassments and rehabilitation of victims.
Street plays, folk songs, and percussion ensembles were performed by Gender Community Theatre as part of the celebrations. A rally was also organised.
Writer Rosy Thampy delivered a Women’s Day lecture at the Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi.
“Women should understand their strength to fight against violence against them. They need to find their space in society,” she said. KFRI director B.S. Corrie presided.
Christ College, Irinjalakuda, celebrated the day by honouring the cleaning workers of the college. ‘Thavanish,’ a voluntary organisation in the college, presented ponnada and saris for the cleaning workers of the college — Latha Prakashan, Ambika Dasan, Anitha Manoj, Thara Aziz, and Ratnamani Subramanian.
Thrissur Lions Club honoured former Women’s Commission member and former MLA Meenakshi Thampan. Prof. Thampan worked for women’s empowerment, Lion’s Club vice-governor V.A. Thomachan said.
Lions Club of Thrissur president James Valappila presided.
