Talks are under way to set up a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) power project at Cheemeni in the district to generate 2,000 MW to 2,500 MW, Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed has said.

Ahead of the commencement of the work on the project, talks are also progressing to lay an LNG pipeline network to make the ambitious project feasible, he said, after inaugurating the newly built section office of the KSEB substation at Mavungal, near Kanhangad, on Sunday.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) was passing through a grave crisis due to difference in the rates of power purchased and the power consumed.

The situation was more or less similar in other States too, he said.

While the per-day electricity consumption was put at 6,380 million units, the power generation was pegged at just 13 million units, he said, adding the consumers could save the situation by prudently using energy.

Conservation

The KSEB was suffering an average Rs.200 crore loss a month and energy conservation assumed as much significance as power generation, he said.

Earlier in the day, he inaugurated the KSEB’s section office at Perla town, some 30 km from here, bordering Karnataka.
