Financial and legal impediments cited as reasons

: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has decided not to take over the Pariyaram Medical College, thus setting aside the UDF government’s decision to take over the Pariyaram Medical College under the cooperative sector.

The decision of the LDF government, as announced in an order of the Health and Family Welfare Department in response to a plea by a local action committee for the takeover of the college, cited financial and legal impediments to the takeover. The action committee, which had launched an agitation demanding the takeover of the college, said the stir would be resumed after examining the legal aspects of the government order.

The order, dated June 28, said though the government had examined the takeover matter in detail in consultation with the Finance and Law Departments, it found that it was not easy to clear the impediments, mainly financial, and legal issues involved in bringing the medical college and allied institutions under the government control or as an autonomous institution.

Policy decision

The government, it said, had not arrived at a policy decision in the matter of taking over the medical college, the order said rejecting the representation of D. Surendranath, convener of the action committee.

Dr. Surendranath, an activist, had made the representation to the government earlier demanding a final decision on the medical college takeover issue.

He had also approached the High Court with a writ petition in this regard. The court had directed the State government to take a decision on his representation.

When contacted, Mr. Surendranath said that the action committee would go ahead with the agitation demanding the government takeover of the college. The committee was also planning to explore legal options to press its demand, he added.
