The district committees of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) jointly organised a meeting at Kanjikode on Saturday to conduct a ‘symbolic foundation stone laying' of the Railway coach factory on the 431 acres of land given to the Railways by the State government.

The ‘symbolic' function was organised in protest against the decision of the Railways to change the date of the inaugural function, which was scheduled for Saturday. The CITU and DYFI leaders said Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi had announced that the foundation stone for the Kanjikode Railway Coach Factory would be laid on October 22, 2011, at a meeting held with the delegation led by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Thiruvananthapuram on September 19. The meeting was inaugurated by CITU district secretary K. Prabhakaran.

The ‘symbolic' foundation stone for the Coach Factory was laid by CPI (M) leader Rasheed Kanicheri.

The meeting was addressed by V. Karthikeyan, secretary, Pudussery area committee of the CPI(M); S.B. Raju, secretary, Pudussery area committee of the CITU; and Nithin Kanicheri, secretary, Pudussery block committee of the DYFI.
