: The district administration has decided to set up police patrolling at the Thanneermukkom barrage.

The decision to step up surveillance in the region was taken at a meeting of the District Development Committee on Saturday on the basis of longstanding concerns raised by various sections. The move is aimed at preventing anti-social elements from hindering the proper functioning of the shutters of the barrage. Such incidents have been reported in the region in the past, officials said.

The meeting also decided to organise a meeting of the principal agricultural officer, Supplyco officials and representatives of paddy clusters to resolve the existing problems faced in paddy procurement during the harvest season. It was also resolved to constitute a committee in order to adopt measures to prevent farmers from being fleeced by agents who charge exorbitant rents for combine harvesters.

Speaking on the occasion, A.M. Ariff, MLA, demanded strong measures to rein in the illegal activities of the drug mafia in the district.
