April 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - KOLLAM:

The canteens of hospitals in and around the city were subjected to a surprise check on Friday by a team lead by the Taluk Supply Officer, Y. Azad. The check was to ensure hygiene standards and quality of water and ingredients used for preparation.

Mr. Azad said that the prices at some canteens were very high and these had been ordered to stick to the prescribed rates. He said the price of ‘kanji’ per plate was found to be Rs.25 at a canteen while the prescribed rate was Rs.10. The rates were brought down and corrections were made in the billing machine. Tea was sold here at Rs.10 and this also was brought down to Rs.8. Mr. Azad said most canteens were seen using quality ingredients to cook food.
