A group of veterinarians at the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), Pookode, Wayanad, rescued a four-month-old female calf impaled on a bamboo pole, on Friday.

The animal, owned by K. Subair, was admitted to the veterinary hospital of the KVASU around 4.30 p.m. after a foot-and-half-long pole pierced through its abdomen. A team of surgeons led by P.T. Dinesh and S. Suryadas, Assistant Professors, Department of Surgery, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CVAS) under the KVASU, performed a four-hour open surgery on the calf. The internal organs had not been affected, Dr. Dinesh told The Hindu . The calf had overcome a critical state now, Dr. Suryadas said.
