Summer pushes power consumption up

Dams in the State altogether hold water to generate 931.864 mu

With the mercury ruling high, power consumption has reached near record levels in the State.

On Thursday, electricity consumption was 79.2574 million units (mu), which is close to 80.6 mu recorded on April 26, 2016, the highest ever for a day. The highest level of power consumption last year was 77.58 mu.

The statistics show an increase in consumption level as the summer gains strength with slightest variations on days of summer rains.

There is a direct link between rising mercury and power consumption levels with air conditioners and water dispensers working overtime.

Though, Idukki dam, which supplies nearly half of the electricity used in the State, has more water than last season, there is an apprehension over the fast depleting water level. Now, evaporation level also is at a high with the catchment area of the dam spread over a large area. A Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) official on Friday said power generation at the Moolamattom powerhouse was at a low level now. The generation level was decided by demand and supply from various sources, including power purchased from outside the State.

Rain has little impact

Summer rains so far had little impact on the inflow through the Periyar, which has turned to a trickle near Ayyappancoil, where it merges with the dam waters.

Sources said power consumption had gone up in March itself with the temperature on the rise. The increasing number of consumers and higher dependence on power had pushed up the consumption levels. At present, the dams in the State altogether hold water to generate 931.864 mu. The KSEB expects a fall in power consumption with the completion of SSLC exams and holidays from Friday.

With over 60 days for southwest monsoon, there is apprehension that power consumption will reach a new high.

The power generation at Idukki is expected to rise with electricity consumption going up as it is reserved for generation during the summer season.
