Poet and environment activist Sugathakumari is making misleading statements against the Union government’s land acquisition policies, Bharatiya Janata Party State unit president V. Muraleedharan has said.

He was addressing a public meeting here on Monday.

The BJP leader said Ms. Sugathakumari had made negative comments on the policies, at a meeting convened by the Communist Party of India, without understanding the facts.

The common man would think that she is right, he said.

No basis

The new Land Acquisition Bill never favoured land acquisition by any private party or agency and the propaganda that the policy was to protect corporate interests had no basis, he said.

Mr. Muraleedharan said the BJP stood firm with the people of Aranmula.

The propaganda unleashed by the KGS Group and the Congress against the BJP was aimed at confusing the public, he alleged. Union Minister of State for Environment Prakash Javadekar had stated in the Lok Sabha that the Centre would never permit the Aranmula airport project.

However, Mr. Muraleedharan said, he did not see anything wrong in giving permission for an environment impact assessment in Aranmula because a proper study would never permit alteration of such a biodiversity-rich wetland like the Aranmula Puncha.

T.R. Ajithkumar, BJP district unit president, presided. District unit leaders V. Suraj, Pradeep Cherukol, Ashokan Kulanada, and V.S.Harishchandran spoke.
