A Sub-Inspector who attempted to seize a tipper lorry transporting illegally mined red soil was on Tuesday brutally attacked by a gang, suspected to be deputed by mafias operating in the sector.

P.K. Jijeesh, Sub-Inspector attached to the Mankara police station in Palakkad district, was admitted to a private hospital here with multiple injuries following the attack which took place in the morning. According to the police, Mr. Jijeesh and a constable intercepted a tipper lorry carrying red soil at Edathara, near Mankara, and were taking it to the police station when a group of people, who came in a car, blocked the lorry a few km away from the station and attacked the police officer using wooden logs. The attackers escaped in their car.
