Nurseries have been set up in 73 grama panchayats in the district.

The district panchayat has readied 5 lakh sapling for students who will plant them on World Environment Day on June 5.

As part of the Jalashree project, 21 lakh saplings were prepared this year through panchayats.

Nurseries were set up in all the 73 grama panchayats in the district for this purpose, said district panchayat president V.K. Madhu.

The saplings are being distributed in schools as part of the second phase of Jalashree.

Varieties

Saplings of mango, jackfruit and guava trees are being provided.

The planted saplings will be taken care as part of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

In addition to schools, saplings will be distributed in local self government institutions and other government institutions.

The Environment Day is being observed with a wide range of programmes in the district.

A meeting was convened at the Collectorate on Monday to chalk out the events for the day.
