College students have vowed to volunteer for palliative care activities to help people who are bed-ridden due to accidents and diseases.
This was announced at a gathering of 500 student volunteers organised jointly by All India Radio, Kannur, National Service Scheme unit of Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women’s College here, Chaitanya Charitable Trust, and Students in Palliative Care here on Wednesday.
The message that was highlighted during the day-long deliberations was that the people who received palliative care needed care and support to lead a normal life and not sympathy.
According to the organisers, the students who attended the sessions decided to extend all help to people who were in need of support and care.
K. Balachandran, AIR Kannur programme head, said the student volunteers had assembled at the gathering to listen to stories of people who could not survive without the help of fellow people.
He said the personal experiences narrated by the victims of accidents or diseases were touching.
They shared their experiences of survival, he said adding that many of them had started a good living with the support and cooperation offered by voluntary organisations.
The students took the pledge that they would spare some time to involve themselves in service-oriented activities.
College Principal M.K. Suresh Babu and Chaitanya Charitable Trust president R. Anil Kumar were among those present at the gathering.
