Student wins award for designing low-cost home

Jonu John Thomas, an architecture student of the National Institute of Technology, Kozhikode, has won the award instituted by the Kerala State Nirmithi Kendra for designing a house costing Rs. 1 lakh.

About 20 persons had participated in the competition that required the participants to prepare innovative blue prints; keeping cost, area, the time needed for construction, and energy supply in mind.

Announcing the award here on Wednesday, Minister for Forests and Housing Benoy Viswam said that the award carried Rs. 50,000. He would present the award to the winner on October 5, the World Habitat Day.

The Minister also announced that the first course to be offered by the Laurie Baker International School of Habitat Studies here would be launched next month. It would be a three-day course for officers of the HUDCO.
