It’s again days of anguish and anxiety for coastal dwellers of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Lakshadweep islands as the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Telangana, has issued high wave warnings for the regions.
Strong winds and waves of height between 7 ft and 9 ft from sea level can be expected along the Kerala coast.
The warning is for Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts of the State, the centre said. There is the possibility of swell waves, and consequential inundation on the State coast during the next three days, a warning issued by T.M. Balakrishnan Nair, Head of the Ocean Science and Information Services Group of INCOIS, said.
“The Kerala coast is likely to witness wave surges similar to that experienced last week. The wave surges are caused by high-energy swell waves of high period and height of around 2 metres. The effects are likely to be higher along the southern coast,” the communication said. The researchers have listed Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam as more vulnerable, as compared to the coastal districts in the northern parts of the State. They said low-lying areas of the coastal districts are likely to be affected more.
Ocean experts said high swell waves were likely to hit the State starting Friday evening. These could extend till Sunday.
Researchers cautioned that maximum wave surge and inundation would be experienced during midnight. The wave surges were likely to increase and decrease alternatively during the coming few days. The wave effects would get compounded by high tides and spring tides, the officials said. They have alerted the coastal population and fishermen venturing out into the sea to exercise caution.
Other States
INCOIS has also forecast high swell waves in the range of 2 metres to 2.4 metres till 11 p.m. on Saturday along the Lakshadweep islands between Minicoy and Bitra.
