Normal life was affected as banks, shops and other business establishments remained closed in the 24-hour nation-wide general strike called by the trade unions from Monday midnight.

There was no untoward incident being reported from any part of the district during the strike period. Barring a few two-wheelers and four wheelers, KSRTC and private buses, autorickshaws and other vehicles kept off the road in the district. The petrol pumps were also closed down. The Government offices recorded thin attendance, even though dies non was declared for the striking employees. Tourists had a tough time as shops and hotels were closed down for the day. Some of the shops opened in the evening.

The striking unions took out a rally in the town on Tuesday morning.

The area in and around the Chettikulangara Devi Temple, where the famous Chettikulangara Bharani festival was held on Tuesday, was exempted from the strike.
