A pack of three stray dogs attacked at least 10 persons at Thevalakara, near here, on Friday morning. The majority of the victims are women and children. The dogs entered two houses and mauled people. Two of the dogs were later beaten to death by a group of people.

Eye witnesses said the dogs started the attack early in the morning and their frenzy went on for about three hours. The first attack was reported shortly before 6 a.m. when the dogs attacked one Rajendran from behind when he was tending to crops in his farm.

Renuka, 23, and her son Adarsh, 5, and neighbours Santhakumari, 55, and Surya, 28, were attacked in their houses. Adarsh was badly bitten in the head. When they raised an alarm, others rushed to the scene and chased away the dogs.

Later, one Sheeba, 26, and her son Mohammed, 5, were attacked, near the Thevalakara Devi temple. Sheeba was taking her son to school. The dogs then attacked an 11-year-old girl, Aparna, in the same area. She said though she tried to run as the dogs came barking from behind, the pack outran her and attacked her.

All the attacks took place along by-lanes near a place where large quantities of poultry waste was dumped, the local people said.
