A Sub Inspector of Police here is likely to face disciplinary action for allegedly manhandling and using abusive language against a councillor of the city Corporation, based on a report by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) submitted to the Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode city.
Police sources said ACP (Special branch) D. Sali submitted a confidential report based on the incident to Commissioner P. Vijayan on Wednesday. The report follows an allegation that Jeevan George, Sub Inspector at the Feroke police station here, manhandled Ponnathu Devarajan, councillor, Marad, at the Marad police station at around 8 p.m. on Sunday.
The Commissioner had asked the ACP to furnish a report after Mayor A.K. Premajam filed a complaint with him.
Mr. Devarajan had reached the Marad station after he had received a call that there was a commotion in the station following the arrest of two brothers after a drunken brawl. Around 100 people had gathered at the station as one of the arrested persons got injured on the head after hitting the wall of the station. Some local persons forcibly released him from the station and took him to a hospital believing that the police had tortured him.
Mr. George had then been asked by senior officers to assist the Marad police in the situation. Although Mr. Devarajan identified himself, he was hit and pushed out of the station. It was alleged that the officer had also used abusive language against the elected representative. ACP (South) Debash Kumar Behra was present at the time of the incident. The tense situation at the station was normalised after Mr. Devarajan asked the local people to disperse.
The Mayor had also sent a demi-official letter to Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan seeking the suspension of the policeman. The city Corporation council had already passed a resolution in this regard.
