Minister for Electricity A.K. Balan on Saturday said the government was keen on reducing transmission loss and had taken steps for augmenting power distribution.

Transmission loss estimated at nearly a quarter of the production was a major problem in the State and it could be reduced considerably to bring on par with other States. This, the Minister said, would ensure quality power and help in booting industrial development.

Inaugurating an electricity adalat at Thodupuzha on Saturday, the Minister said Kerala was set to become a surplus power State and measures had been taken to achieve the objective.

The transmission sector alone witnessed an investment of Rs.1,800 crore and the work on 95 substations had been completed.

Mr. Balan said transmission loss could be reduced from 22.6 per cent to 17.2 per cent and it would soon reach the average country-level of 15 per cent.

The Minister said 18,600 transformers were installed and the work on setting up 1,400 was going on.

Providing statutory voltage in 13 districts was a major success in the power sector, he said adding that Kerala was set to become a completely electrified State.

He said Idukki would also be brought on a par with other districts in terms of power connection. The process for establishing substations at Vannappuram, Murikkassery, Kumily and Vandanmedu was completed, he said. P.J. Joseph, MLA, presided over the inaugural function.

Of the 489 complaints received, 322 were settled at the adalat, which was held at the St. Sebastian's parish hall.
