Steps on to make chief whip post constitutional: Unniyadan

May 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:56 am IST - MALAPPURAM:

Government Chief Whip Thomas Unniyadan has said that moves were afoot to make the chief whip’s post a constitutional one through legislation.

“We have consulted with our counterparts in other States, and are going ahead with the move to make the post a constitutionally valid one through legislation,” Mr. Unniyadan said while addressing a meet-the-press at the Malappuram Press Club on Friday.

He said his predecessor P.C. George should have abided by the rules and regulations of the Kerala Congress (M). “Discipline and loyalty is a must for all party workers, including Mr. George,” he said referring to Mr. George’s removal from the chief whip’s post.

Mr. Unniyadan described parties shifting fronts after elections as highly dangerous for a healthy democratic polity. But he said that he could do nothing as a government whip to prevent such shifting of parties.

He said he played a key role as the chief whip in ensuring the victory of the UDF candidates in the recently held Rajya Sabha elections.

Earlier, Mr. Unniyadan visited Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State president Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal at his Panakkad house and held discussions about strengthening the UDF. P. Ubaidulla, MLA, accompanied Mr. Unniyadan.
