The State Civil Supplies Department has begun steps to issue new ration cards under the National Food Security Act.

The process was set in motion in the State capital with the trial photographing of the eldest female members of families at the Vivekananda Vidyapeet at Pachalloor here on Friday.

The process will officially begin on January 19 and continue till March 14. The new ration cards are issued as part of the implementation of the National Food Security Act and each new card will be given in the name of the senior-most female member of the family.

The new cards will replace the existing Target in Public Distribution System (TPDS) cards for Above Poverty Line (APL) and Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

The new cards would be categorised as Priority Cards for the poorer sections. The department would collect information based on details of Aadhaar Card, Bank Account, Phone number, and so on. A questionnaire in this regard had been prepared and based on this a list would be prepared.

The people would be classified accordingly, Mr. Rajendran Nair, District Civil Supplies Officer, said.
