Nilgiri tahr census to begin today

The census of Nilgiri tahr at Rajamala inside the Eravikulam National Park will begin on Monday.

This year, the census is being simultaneously held in all the places were the presence of the animal was noticed in the State. In the district, it included Munnar division and Periyar in addition to the territorial areas and Pothadimala in Marayur.

In Eravikulam, there will be 30 blocks for the census team and the process will conclude on April 20. A forest official said that help of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department would be sought for conducting the census on the border areas from next year. Rajamala was closed for the visitors from February 1 to March 31 in view of the breeding season. — A Correspondent
