The government will bring out a State policy for the welfare of the elderly, Chief Miniser Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

Emerging from a meeting with non-resident Keralite doctors here on Friday, he said the government was considering a proposal to establish day care homes for senior citizens and implement a mechanism under which volunteers called on aged people living alone and provided them with medical care. Local bodies would be drafted into the programme, he said.

Mr.Vijayan said moves were afoot to organise regular medical camps for schoolchildren and prepare a database of cancer patients.

Noted physician M.S.Valiathan stressed the need to avoid unnecessary medical investigations and scanning.

K.M. Cherian, M.G. Sarngadharan, M.V. Pillai, Chief Secretary Paul Antony, chairman of Innovation Council K.M. Abraham and IT Secretary M. Sivasankar were among those who participated in the discussions.
