C.N. Jayadevan, MP, on Sunday said the Union Budget totally neglected the State.

“The government has given a shock to the people. It will make the poor poorer. The Modi government has proven that its budget is for the corporates. The budget reduced the tax for corporates. But the subsidies for farmers have been cut. It has opened all major projects for foreign and private firms. No funds have been allotted for Adarsh Gram Project,” he said.

Joseph Alappat, former Vice-Chairman of the Coconut Development Board, said the Budget was against the interest of farmers. The farmers were distressed because of the reduction in subsidies, he said. No announcement was made to give support to the agriculture sector, he added.

Cycle rally

Meanwhile, Congress party activists took out a cycle rally in the city on Sunday to protest against the fuel price hike. Oil marketing companies hiked the prices of petrol and diesel hours after the Union Budget was presented on Saturday.

District Congress Committee general secretary Johan Daniel inaugurated the rally. East Mandalam Congress president T.R. Santhosh Kumar presided over. Councillors Biju Varghese, Prabhudas Panengadan, Happy Mathai and Kurian Muttath led the march.
