Sports mission to be set up

Overall development of sports the objective

The government is considering setting up a sports mission on the lines of the successful State Literacy Mission for overall development of sports in the State and to equip sportspersons to excel in national and international sporting events.

This was announced by Minister for Sports A.C. Moideen while replying to a calling attention motion by T.V. Rajesh in the Assembly on Monday on the necessity to ensure overall development of the sector.

The Minister said the government had already initiated several steps for the development of the sector and to encourage the sportspersons. Mr. Moideen said steps would be taken to improve facilities in the sports hostels in the State.

The government would also look into whether more land could be acquired for laying a track and creating infrastructure at G.V. Raja Sports School at Mylam in the capital. The Minister also asked the the 42 sport associations registered with the Kerala Sports Council to confine their activities to sports events.

In reply to another calling attention motion by Mons Joseph on the need for time-bound action to address drinking water scarcity, Minister for Water Resources Mathew T. Thomas said the government had taken all steps in view of the deficit in rainfall.

The steps usually taken in February and March were rolled out in November itself and priority was being given to commissioning drinking water projects that were in the final stages, the Minister said detailing the 14 steps of the department.

The government was ready to implement the bill discounting system for contractors as in the PWD and the Irrigation Department as suggested by Mr. Joseph, the Minister said. The government had an open mind and would execute it if it was practical.
