The Union Minister of State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas has said that the Central government will provide financial help to State Horticulture Mission to make special projects for the preservation of Jackfruits available in plenty in the State.
Inaugurating the Fruit Processing Scheme of the People’s Service Society here on Friday the Minister said that Jackfruit is like the ‘Kalpakavriksha” that has wide usage.
The Jackfruit available in plenty in its season is going waste in the absence of scheme to preserve it and use it through out the year. This will help the Jackfruit farmers and ensure the food security by providing eco-friendly food products of various types.
The Minister said that a jackfruit processing scheme will be implemented in Attappady as part of the Centre government’s special agriculture package for this most backward tribal areas of the district.
The meeting was presided over by Palakkad Bishop Mar Jacob Manathodath.
It was addressed by Shafi Parambil, M.L.A, Fr. Joseph Chittilapilly, President, People’s Service Society, M.B. Sureshkumar, Director, State Resources Centre among others.

It is a nutritious fruit, rich in vitamins A, B and C, potassium,
calcium, iron, proteins and carbohydrates. Due to the high levels of
carbohydrates, jackfruit supplements other staple foods in times of
scarcity in some regions.Jack is widely grown as an important tree in
Kerala’s homesteads and also as a shade crop in coffee plantations. It
is popularly known as poor man’s fruit in the eastern and southern
parts if India.
The importance of jackfruit has to be get noticed. When we are living
in other countries/states, we really know the value of this fruit.
Government decision for preservation of this fruit is a good thing and
it is most welcome.
