Transport Minister V.S. Sivakumar said that the State Government was mulling over a proposal to institute a special fund that was meant for the benefit of financially-backward persons who are injured in road accidents. By way of the proposal, financial assistances will be provided to the injured for medical treatments.

He was delivering the presidential address during the inaugural function of the Road Safety Week observance here on Sunday.

Mr. Sivakumar also called for the inclusion of traffic laws in the curriculum at schools from the next academic year onwards.

He added that the State Government has adopted the necessary measures in tackling the shortage of staff in the Motor Vehicles Department. As part of such measures, sanction has been provided by the Finance Department for the constitution of 17 enforcement squads in the State.
