When Gaatha K. went up on stage for the Kathaprasangam high school event on Saturday morning, it was a rare moment for her author-grandfather Mundoor Sethumadhavan.
The writer’s eyes welled up as he witnessed the storyteller narrate his own short story Amma Koyunnu on stage. “I am touched by her rendering. But its for you to tell how she performed,” said Sethumadhavan as he congratulated Gaatha and her team, which represented St. Gemmas GHSS, Malappuram.
“My daughter Shyama K., an employee with the Postal Department in Malappuram, had won the inter-university Kathaprasangam earlier. She helped Gaatha brush up her skills,” said the writer.
Amma Koyunnu narrates the story of a child Bhuvana, who had nothing else to draw but the image of her mother harvesting paddy fields, while participating in a drawing competition.
Encouraged by her teacher Kasturi, the kid finally bags the first prize in the event by mapping an image that remained close to her heart while the other participants focussed on national and international issues.
Sethumadhavan rated the performance of the other teams as “excellent” before leaving the venue for Mundoor.
