Sonia’s emotional reply to PM: Don’t question my love for India

May 10, 2016 02:06 am | Updated 02:21 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday gave an emotional reply to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks related to corruption in the AgustaWestland helicopter deal and vehemently asserted that no one could question her commitment to and love for the country.

Addressing a huge election rally here late on Monday evening, Ms. Gandhi said she would like to make a personal statement and share something about her.

“I was born in Italy. I came to India in 1968 as the daughter-in-law of [former Prime Minister] Indira Gandhi. I have spent 48 years of my life here. This is my home, this is my country. All of the 48 years I have been here, the RSS and the BJP have tried to shame me on my birth. Yes, I was born to strong and honest parents. My mother is 93 years old and I have two sisters. This is my country. This is where the blood of my beloved has fallen. It is here that I will breathe my last. My ashes will mingle with that of my dear ones.”

PM’s remark

Mr. Modi, in his election meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, had said it was not the Central government that mentioned the names of Congress leaders in the AgustaWestland deal, but an Italian court.

The Congress president said: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot perhaps understand my feelings. I am sure you will understand it,” she said amid loud applause from the crowd.
