The State president of the Indian National Trade Union Congress, R. Chandrashekaran, has said that 2.5 lakh INTUC members from all over the State will take part in a rally here on Saturday to herald its all-India working committee meeting to be held here on February 17 and 18. All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi will address the rally at Asramam maidan here at 4.30 p.m. that day.
Mr. Chandrashekaran said the rally would commence from the maidan at 1.30 p.m. and return there by 4 p.m. after passing through Sankar Hospital Junction, Chinnakada, Chamakada, and Taluk Office Junction.
About 1,500 volunteers from the INTUC youth wing would guide the rally.
Mr. Chandrashekaran said the INTUC had been demanding that the benefits of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme be passed on to workers of the traditional sector too.
Earlier the INTUC had planned the meeting, to be addressed by Ms. Gandhi, on the Kollam beach. But the site was not approved by the Special Protection Group for security reasons.
Hence the venue was shifted to the maidan.
