Slight fall in turnout in Kottayam

Poll percentage of 73%; in 2011, the figure was 73.79

: The poll percentage in the district has registered a marginal plunge in the elections to the 14th Legislative Assembly against the polling percentage in 2011.

Monday’s poll figures have been put at 73 per cent by district election officer Swagat Bhandari. This was 73.79 in 2011.

Only Puthuppally where Chief Minister Ooomen Chandy contested and Poonjar, which witnessed a four cornered fight, registered a slightly improved poll percentage.

The constituency-wise polling percentage is as follows: Pala: 73.2 (73.68); Kaduthuruthy: 64.8 (71.17); Vaikom: 77.7 (79.15); Ettumanur: 76.6 (78.51); Kottayam: 76.9 (77.54); Puthuppally: 76.8 (74.46); Changanassery: 65.5 (72.56); Kanjirappally: 64.8 (70.71) and Poonjar: 71.8 (70.16).

The district experienced showers, though the India Meteorological Department had predicted that there was likely to be heavy to very heavy rains in isolated places. However, the average rainfall in the district was only 1 mm on Monday as per the IMD.

Tension at Kumarakom

Meanwhile, an atmosphere of tension is prevailing in Kumarakom as activists of BDJS and CPI(M) have come to blows at a polling station at the Nava Nazrath Church, identified as a critical polling Station. The police are camping there.
