In a dramatic turn of events, the police arrested a man after he kidnapped a six-year old girl near Cheruvathur in the district on Sunday.

Aruldas, 60, a native of Tamil Nadu, was found with the girl in Kannur as the police at the Cheemeni station alerted their counterparts on receiving a missing complaint from the girl’s father.

Sona, daughter of Prasad and Befathima, residents of Anikkadi near Cheemeni was said to have been abducted by the man, as the girl’s mother had left home to fetch potable water on Sunday morning, the police said.

Aruldas had been staying in the neighbourhood of the family for the past 10 years and was eking out a life by begging. He took away the girl unnoticed by her mother, the police said.

On a complaint lodged by Mr. Prasad, the Cheemeni police informed other police stations in the district and neighbouring Kannur, Sub Inspector P. J. Jose told The Hindu .

Following the alert, the Kannur Town Police nabbed the physically challenged man along with the girl while they were travelling in a private bus in the city and the girl was handed over to her parents this evening.

Aruldas told the police that he was taking the child to his wife who was staying in Kozhikode.

The police who have registered a case under IPC section 363 (Kidnapping) against the man and he would be produced in a court in Kanhangad on Monday, he said.

Rescued

Our Special Correspondent writes from Kannur: The Town police here on Sunday rescued the six-year old girl from a bus at Talap here. The man was travelling with the six-year old child. The police acted following a tip-off.

According to the police, the girl knew the man as his wife had worked with the child’s mother under the National Rural Health Mission scheme. Parents of the child reached the station at 2.30 p.m. and took the girl with them. Arul Das was taken to the Cheemeni police which registered a case of kidnapping.
