A silent prayer was held at the boat landing station in Thekkady, on Friday, in homage to the 45 victims of the boat tragedy at Mullaperiyar Lake on September 30, 2009.

Leaders of various religious groups converged at the boat landing station at 11 a.m. Officials of Kumily grama panchayat and peoples' representatives attended the function.

'Jalakanyaka', a double-decker tourist boat owned by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC), drowned at Marakkanam.

Justice E. Moideen Kunju Commission which inquired into the accident submitted a report on August 24, 2011, to Cheif Minister Oommen Chandy stating that a defective boat, over-loading and an inexperienced driver had resulted in the accident.

Though the boat had the capacity to carry only 75 passengers, there were 92 people on board the boat when the accident happened. The Commission also held the officials of the KTDC responsible for the accident.
