The shutters of the major dams in the district were opened on Sunday after the water crossed the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) in the heavy rain in the catchment areas of the reservoirs for the last couple of days.
District Collector K.V. Mohan Kumar on Sunday issued an alert to the people living on the banks of the rivers and irrigation canals about the possibility of water level rising. Due to heavy rain in the catchment areas of the Aliyar, the dam shutters have been opened and there is likely flooding of Chitturpuzha areas.
The shutters of Malampuzha Dam were opened last week after water reached the FRL of 115.08 metres. The shutters of Kanjirapuzha were opened after the water level reached the FRL of 99 metres. The shutters of other dams in the district such as Mangalam and Pothundy were also opened following heavy inflow.
The three major dams in the Parambikulam group of reservoirs of the inter-State Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) have also crossed the FRL. The shutters of the Aliyar Dam were opened after the water level reached FRL of 1,050 ft. Now more than 4,000 cusecs (cubic feet a second) of water is let out from the dam.
Parambikulam, the largest one in the PAP system, is also reaching the FRL of 1,825 ft. The Thunacadavu Dam of the PAP system is also reaching the FRL of 1,770 ft, Water Resources Department sources here said.
