The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Health Secretary to submit a report after investigating a complaint that indecipherable medical prescriptions of doctors are making it difficult for medical stores to read the names of the drugs prescribed.

A release issued by the KSHRC on Wednesday said commission member K. Mohankumar also asked the secretary of the Indian Medical Association and the District Medical Officer in the district to submit explanations in the wake of complaints that medical shops were finding it difficult to read the illegibly written names of medicines in the doctors’ prescriptions. The issue would be taken up at the next sitting of the commission at the Government Guesthouse here on May 11, it said. Mr. Mohankumar, in his order, said even experienced pharmacists were finding it difficult to read the names of medicines.

The release said interested individuals and organisations could submit their opinion and proposals at the sitting. The Medical Council of India had directed the doctors that names of drugs in prescriptions be written in capital letters.
