SHRC not to act on Suryanelli issue

February 07, 2013 01:58 am | Updated June 13, 2016 04:07 am IST - KOTTAYAM:

State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) chairman J.B. Koshy has said that the statements being made in the context of the Suryanelli rape case are mostly politically motivated.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Koshy said he gave scant regard to the recent developments in the issue. He said the commission would not act upon the issue as it was under the consideration of court.

Later, inaugurating a debate organised in connection with the ongoing Darsana International Book Fair, he pointed out that there was no dearth of laws for the protection of women. However, it was the improper implementation of the laws that ultimately resulted in insecurity for women. In addition, the practice of misusing power by filing false cases had also contributed to the present scenario.

He called for social movements that encouraged victims hailing from disadvantages sections to voice their complaints and grievances. A support system must be put in place to prevent exploitation of the innocent, he said.
