Ambalappuzha Judicial First Class Magistrate, V. Udayakumar on Tuesday remanded Mayur Veerendra Kumar, seaman and second accused in the collision case involving Singapore-flagged ship, m.v.Prabhu Daya and Kollam-based fishing boat, Don-I who was released to police custody till 5 p.m. on Tuesday, back to judicial custody till March 29.

Ambalappuzha police produced Mayur before the court on Tuesday as his police custody expired by 5 p.m. The counsel of Mayur had moved a bail application for him on Tuesday. It will be considered on March 23.

Ambalappuzha CI, P.V. Baby who was leading the questioning of the three accused in the case including Prasobh Sugathan, first accused and the second officer of ship, m.v.Prabhu Daya, told The Hindu that Prasobh had on Tuesday said that nobody had thrown him off the ship, but he slipped and fell accidently from the ship. This is in contrast to what his father had said in his complaint on which Ambalappuzha police had registered a case. His father had alleged that captain and others on the ship had thrown his son off the ship off Trincomalee.

Sources said that what is now being clear is that there was contradiction in the statements of Prasobh. It is learnt that he told the police on Tuesday that he was on duty at the bridge of the ship when the accident occured and he reported the incident to the captain.

The police will continue the questioning of Prasobh and captain of the ship, Gordon Charles Pereira, on Wednesday.
